We admire a Rolex Submariner. Of course we do. It is brilliant. But the standard version? There are enough of them out there to equip a small navy.
We look for things with character, eccentricity and a little danger. The unusual dial. The forgotten reference. The piece nobody else at dinner is wearing.
The same goes for jewellery. A flawless two-carat Top Wesselton diamond in an immaculate Tiffany setting is magnificent — but terribly well behaved. Give us an old mine-cut or rose-cut diamond instead: imperfect, individual and carrying centuries of history. Even if some of that history was rather bloody.
Perfection is admirable. Character is irresistible.
